SERI involved in Superbugs Science Exhibition
On July 4, 2019, the Science Exhibition "Superbugs: the Fight for Our Life" was officially opened at the Guangdong Science Center. Professor Guang-Guo Ying, the director of the Environmental Research Institute from South China Normal University (SERI), was invited and attended the opening ceremony with his research team members Dr. Liang-Ying He, Dr. Qian-Qian Zhang, Prof. Chang-Er Chen and Dr. Si-Si Liu. It is reported that the exhibition will last from July to October at the Guangdong Science Center, and will be exhibited in Chongqing, Wuhan and Hangzhou in the next two years.

"Superbugs: The Fight for Our Lives" exhibition is jointly developed and organized by the Guangdong Science Center and the British Science Museum Group. It aims to show the occurrence and evolution of super-resistant bacteria and raise public awareness of multi-antibiotic resistance. The exhibition includes three parts: the micro-world, the human world, and the global vision. The exhibition combines 6 personal stories in China related to antibiotic resistance, including environmental scientist, sewage treatment engineer, farmer, doctor, patient, and nurse. As an environmental scientist, the story of Professor Guang-Guo Ying shows his team's research work on antibiotics and antibiotic resistance for more than a decade. Field sampling, laboratory analysis, and antibiotic usage and contamination in China was presented to the public through documentaries and objects. At the same time, Professor Guang-Guo Ying gave a wonderful science lecture to the public on antibiotic use, emission and resistance in China.

Nowadays, antibiotic resistance has become a major threat to the global public health, and it is also a widespread concern of governments and society around the world. The research team from SERI has been working on antibiotic pollution and bacterial resistance research for more than 10 years. By participating in this science exhibition, we hope to help the public to understand antibiotic resistance, promote the rational use of antibiotics, and appeal multidisciplinary collaborative efforts across different sectors such as health, agriculture and the environment to cope with antibiotic resistance. The related activities have increased the impact of scientific research of SERI at South China Normal University.
